Lefkada is the fourth largest island in the Ionian Sea. Together with the islands Kalamos, Kastos and Meganissi (also well known as Princes’ Islands) is a municipality with capital the town of Lefkada and because of its geographical position its also very accesible through a waterway long bridge about 20 meters. Lefkada and the greek “Evia” island are the two unique islands in Greece which they can be accessed only by your car.

In 1963 when the Greek tycoon Aristotle Onassis bought the Scorpios,
(a small island which is located opposite the eastern coast of Lefkada and more specifically close to the famous touristic Nydri village)
Lefkada acquired a world reputation, hosting occasionally dense crowds
and famous personalities from all over the world…

Lefkada’s history is about the Sappho’s myth suicide at Cape Lefkada and is related to other myths linking the island to the ancient Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite and to Odysseus, the hero of Homer’s Odyssey.

The German archaeologist Wilhelm Dörpfeld, having performed excavations at various locations of Lefkada, was able to obtain funding to do work on the island by suggesting that Lefkada was Homer’s Ithaca, and the palace of Odysseus was located west of Nydri on the south coast of Lefkada.

There have been suggestions by local tourism officials that several passages in the Odyssey point to Lefkada as a possible model for Homeric Ithaca..

Lefkada has several attractions. Just outside of the city and directly opposite from the pontoon bridge (the opening is approximately 40 ft.) is the Enetic castle of Lefkada. The castle is well known as the “Agia Mavra” castle.

Within the city there is the archaeological museum where you can enjoy works of art as well as findings from the Paleolithic to the Roman times and the marina of Lefkada, which is considered to be the largest and most organized marina in the Mediterranean sea.

But in Lefkada a visitor has to walk over the wooden bridge which is built above the channel ( located right in front of the pedestrian zone with its coffee-bars) next to the city’s port. The inhabitants call it “Bridge of Sighs” or “Bridge of lovers”. Built at the beginning of the previous decade and its architecture allows the venetian air in town. On the beach of Gira near the town there are the four windmills (than twelve who were older) which up to the end of the 20th century were used to mill large quantities of cereals derived mainly from Russia. Near Frini village (just outside the town of Lekada) is the Faneromeni’s Monastery which is a sacred Art Museum.
